Methodology

Rule used (SSA Handbook §121 and 20 CFR 404.1807): people who started benefits after May 1997 are paid on the 2nd Wednesday if born on the 1st–10th, the 3rd Wednesday if born on the 11th–20th and the 4th Wednesday if born on the 21st–31st. People who began before May 1997, or who also receive SSI, are paid on the 3rd of the month. SSI is paid on the 1st.

If the scheduled day is a Saturday, Sunday or legal federal holiday, payment is made on the first preceding day that is not. Legal holidays are those on the Federal Reserve K.8 list (the statutory date, not the observed day off).

We checked this implementation against the US Treasury's published payment schedules for 2024 and 2025 (12 months, all five groups): every date matched.

Which day is my Social Security payment?

It depends on your birth day if you started benefits after May 1997: 2nd Wednesday (born 1st–10th), 3rd Wednesday (11th–20th), 4th Wednesday (21st–31st). Otherwise it is the 3rd of the month.

What if the payment day is a holiday?

It is paid on the first preceding day that is not a weekend or legal federal holiday.

Are SSI payments different?

SSI is paid on the 1st of the month, moved to the preceding business day when it falls on a weekend or holiday.
